At Real American Grappling, we recognize those who go beyond showing up and truly set the standard.
Congratulations to Jillian Chalke for being awarded Competitor of the Year for 2021. Jillian earned this through her commitment to competing, relentless training, and refusing to make excuses. In 2021, she stepped on the mats for over 80 matches and brought home more than 30 medals, proving what consistency and work ethic can produce.
Meet Jillian Chalke
What is your name, how old are you, and where are you from? Jillian Chalke, 29, originally from Virginia.
Getting Started in Jiu-Jitsu
What brought you to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Real American Grappling? I literally woke up one day and thought “you know what might be fun?” and chose Real American Grappling because of the women’s program.
Life Outside the Mats
What do you enjoy doing outside of Jiu-Jitsu? When I’m not in the gym I enjoy gardening, traveling, cooking, sewing, and spending time with family and my fiancé Dan.
Training Journey
How long have you been training? Three years, almost exactly.
Lessons From Jiu-Jitsu
What life lessons have you learned from Jiu-Jitsu? The biggest thing I’ve learned is the importance of staying calm under pressure, both literally and figuratively.
Challenges in Training
What is the hardest thing about Jiu-Jitsu? Modulating my intensity during rolls. I tend to go one speed, and it’s something I work on every day.
Proudest Moment
What is your proudest moment in Jiu-Jitsu so far? I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished in a short time, but what stands out most is my consistency. I show up for myself and my teammates no matter what. Being awarded Competitor of the Year is also at the top of my list. My blood, sweat, and tears went into that.
What She Enjoys Most
What do you like most about Jiu-Jitsu? It’s hard to pick just one thing, but if I had to choose, it’s the community and the opportunities it has given me.
Advice for Beginners
What advice would you give to someone just starting Jiu-Jitsu? Don’t set limitations on yourself. People say “I can’t do that because of my size, flexibility, or age,” but Jiu-Jitsu is adaptable for everyone. Not everything will click right away and not every competition will go your way, but if you stay consistent and believe in yourself, you’ll be surprised by what you can achieve.
