Michael Allen
About Michael - Michael Allen is the founder and head instructor of Real American Grappling and a recognized 3rd Degree Black Belt under the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). With over twenty-five years of coaching experience, Michael has developed champions in High School Wrestling, Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, guiding athletes from their first day on the mat to the highest levels of competition.
Michael began his grappling journey in 2000 in Asheville, North Carolina, training in catch wrestling and mixed martial arts at the renowned Team Huskey under the mentorship of Johnny Huskey. This early foundation led him into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where he found his life’s passion. In 2014, Michael earned his Black Belt from Professor Joe Hurst — a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career as a coach, mentor, and academy leader.
Since 2014, Michael has proudly trained under and represented the legendary Leo Vieira, whose leadership and technical influence have played a significant role in shaping Michael’s philosophy on competition, community, and the growth of the art. Michael continues to carry forward the values, discipline, and respect he learned during his time under Vieira, honoring that lineage while building his own vision for the future of grappling.
Known for his intense and competitive mindset and his dedication to his students, he has devoted his life to the sport of jiu jitsu while building strong united teams, both on and off the mats. Michael is a devoted husband and father of five, and he brings the same passion and commitment he has for his family into every aspect of his academy and community.
